Networking for Accountancy Firms

When people think about marketing for accountancy firms, they often think about websites, SEO, or social media etc. Networking never appears high up this list. Yet it’s one of the most effective ways to build trust and win new clients.

I was recently at Guildford Buzz Networking, and it reminded me why networking is so important. You’re in a room full of people, conversations are flowing. You learn about someone’s business in minutes, and they learn about yours. No website visit or email can quite replace that.

For accountancy firms, where trust is so important, networking should sit alongside your other marketing activity, not as an afterthought.

You can learn more on my article where I explained the difference between a marketing strategy and marketing plan, and what should be in each.

How to build a repeatable network

The firms who get the most from networking are the ones who show up consistently. Attending the same event once won’t build much. But turning up to the same group month after month means people start to recognise you, remember what you do, and trust you enough to refer you.

And this is a common theme about marketing. It’s consistently, many firms stop many marketing activities before they have had time for the results to compound.

Niche events are great for certain ideal client profiles

General networking events are useful, but niche events, ones focused on a specific industry or type of business, can be even more valuable if you’re targeting a certain type of client.

If you want to work with more charity businesses, look for events where charity trustees gather. If property owners is your focus, find the groups and events built around that sector.

You’ll have more relevant conversations and meet the right people faster, and it’s a better use of your time.

If you would like to learn how to define your ideal client for your accountancy firm. I explain more in my article: Do your ideal clients know you’re the right firm for them.

Why trust starts in person

Technology has made connecting easier than ever, but it hasn’t replaced the value of meeting someone in person. A handshake, a conversation, and reading someone’s body language all build trust faster than a LinkedIn message ever could.

This is also why video content tends to perform so well. People respond to seeing a real person talk, rather than reading plain text.

For more information on this, you can read my recent article on: Why people-led marketing works for accountancy firms

Networking is a long game for accountants

Networking isn’t about collecting business cards. It’s about showing up consistently, choosing the right rooms for your ideal clients, and having real conversations that build trust over time.

If you’re serious about growing your firm through genuine relationships, make networking a regular part of your marketing plan, not just something you do occasionally.
