If your accountancy firm is growing (4–30+ staff) and you want to grow your firm beyond referrals. It’s time to draw you attention to properly marketing your firm. In theory, you’re looking at two options: hire a marketing agency or bring in a fractional marketing if you’re not ready to hire inhouse.
Both options will give you marketing expertise without the cost of a full-time hire. But they work differently. Let’s look in more detail:
The difference in strategy vs delivery
A marketing agency will deliver specific services: social media, website, SEO content, PPC campaigns. They’re execution specialists, often working across multiple industries at once.
A fractional marketing director sits above that. They build the strategy, decide what needs to happen and why, and then either deliver it directly or manage other third parties (designers, agencies, freelancers) to execute it.
If you’re unclear on the difference between strategy and delivery, I’ve written about this in more detail here: The Difference Between an Accountancy Firm’s Marketing Strategy and Marketing Plan
Agencies are brilliant at the “how.” A fractional marketing director is responsible for the “why” and “what” and makes sure everything ties back to actual business growth, not just activity.
The cost comparison between fractional marketing vs marketing agency
- Agencies often charge per project or per retainer, but you may be paying for several different agencies at once (SEO agency, social media agency, web developer) and none of them are talking to each other. It’s not a co-ordinated effort.
- A fractional marketing director typically works on a single monthly retainer, overseeing everything in one place. You get one point of contact, one strategy, and full accountability.
For many 4–30+ staff firms, a single fractional marketing director retainer often works out more cost-effective than stitching together 2–3 agency relationships, simply because you’re not duplicating strategy work or paying multiple account management fees.
Accountability and consistency make all the difference
With an agency, if results aren’t coming through, it can be unclear whose responsibility that is, if you’re running several agencies simultaneously. Was it the content agency’s fault, or did the website agency not optimise for conversions?
With a fractional marketing director, there’s one person accountable for the whole picture. They know the business, understand the sector, and can see how the content strategy connects to the website conversion strategy, connects to what’s happening on LinkedIn.
This ties into something I talk about often, accountancy firms need their website and messaging to filter and attract the right clients, not just “look nice.” You can read more on that here: Do Your Ideal Clients Know You’re the Right Firm for Them?
That kind of joined-up thinking is hard to get from an agency relationship where no one owns the full strategy from start to finish.
Sector knowledge will get the best results
Generalist marketing agencies often work across completely unrelated industries, hospitality one week, retail the next, professional services after that.
A fractional marketing director who specialises in accountancy firms understands:
- How accountancy firms win clients (referrals, trust & reputation. These aren’t flashy campaigns).
- The buying cycle and decision-making process of business owners choosing an accountant.
- What messaging resonates with your ideal client size and niche.
- How to position a growing firm against both larger and smaller competitors.
This sector-specific insight tends to shortcut a lot of the “getting to know your business” phase that agencies often need (and bill for).
Which is better for you firm, agency or fractional marketing?
An agency might be the right fit if:
- You already have a clear strategy and just need execution support.
- You have in-house marketing leadership already, and just need extra hands
A fractional marketing director might be the right fit if:
- You don’t currently have anyone responsible for marketing strategy.
- You’ve tried agencies before but felt the results were disjointed.
- You want senior-level thinking without the cost of a full-time hire.
- You’re growing (10–30+ staff) and need marketing to scale with the business, not just “tick along”.
If you’re still unsure which route makes sense for your firm, I’ve put together a more detailed guide here: How to Choose a Fractional Marketing Director for Accountancy Firms.
A fractional marketing director example:
That’s often the real gap fractional support fills, not more marketing activity, but the right activity, connected to a clear strategy, with someone accountable for the outcome.
We have been working with Sarena for a while and have really noticed the difference this had made to our business. Sarena really likes to get into the detail – she wants to know the business, know the clients that we are targeting and why/how we are doing this. She has then put her considerable knowledge into building a really effective marketing strategy for us. This has really helped us to grow and it is great to see the hard work that Sarena has put in pay off. Thanks for all of your help Sarena and here’s to many more years of hard work paying off. – Tom Kirk, Partner (Harling and Kirk Accountants).

Agencies and fractional marketing directors aren’t competitors, they solve different problems. If you need a single accountable person to build and own your firm’s marketing strategy, bring in the right specialists, and make sure everything works together, that’s where fractional support comes in.
