The Situation
As Budget season approached, Harling & Kirk Accountants (HK) were facing a familiar challenge.
Speculation was already circulating in the media, and clients were beginning to ask questions ahead of any official announcements. The team needed a way to stay ahead of the noise, support their clients, and demonstrate leadership, without increasing pressure on their internal team.
The Problem They Were Facing
Without a structured communication approach:
- Clients were contacting the firm reactively
- The team risked being overwhelmed during an already busy period
- There was no consistent way to manage client expectations
- Opportunities for proactive, advisory-led conversations were currently limited
Like many accounting firms, communication was happening, but not in a strategic way. Which is what we wanted to shift. The HK prides itself on their proactive approach to clients and we wanted to showcase this to their clients.
What we did
We introduced a simple, structured Budget communication strategy, focused on timing, clarity and consistency.
- Pre-Budget Email (expectation setting ahead of the Budget)
Two weeks before the Budget, we sent a clear, reassuring email to clients:
- Acknowledging media speculation
- Confirming the firm was monitoring developments
- Setting expectations for a post-Budget update to clients
This positioned the firm as proactive and in control, before the pressure peaked.
- Post-Budget Email + PDF Digital Summary
Following the Budget announcement:
- A professionally designed PDF summary was created
- There was a landing page on the website designed to support clients with any questions they may have
- Key changes were explained in a clear in a client-friendly format. This was also done within 24hrs of the Budget announcement.
- A follow-up email directed clients to the summary and website.
This shifted client conversations from reactive questions to informed discussions.
The Results
The results significantly outperformed typical email marketing benchmarks.
